Salesforce record IDs are base-62 identifiers consisting of numbers (0-9), lowercase letters (a-z), and uppercase letters (A-Z).
Because Salesforce is case-sensitive, two distinct records can have the exact same sequence of characters in different capitalization:
Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets do not distinguish uppercase from lowercase in formulas. Matching 15-character IDs causes Excel to misidentify records, attaching opportunities to the wrong accounts.
The 18-character ID appends a 3-character suffix representing the capitalization bitmap of the original 15 characters. Even if Excel converts the string to all lowercase, the 3-letter suffix preserves uniqueness.
The tool automatically validates ID lengths. If a line is already 18 characters, it remains untouched, ensuring your dataset is not corrupted.
Yes! Salesforce Data Loader, Workbench, MuleSoft, and third-party ETL tools all natively accept 18-character IDs, making them the safest choice for bulk upserts.
